Have you ever heard of the Lennox XC21 air conditioner? If you haven’t, you are not alone. Not many people would recognize the name, but sales of the XC21 have been steadily increasing over the past couple of years. This is especially odd because the XC21 is more costly to install than your typical run of the mill air conditioner. Why the price difference? Well, let’s take a closer look at this system, and maybe this will begin to make sense.
What Makes the XC21 So Special?
The average air conditioner is rated at 10 SEER or less. 10 Seer is equivalent to 10BTU/hr per watt of electricity. So guess what XC 21 SEER rating is? That’s right 21BTU/hr per watt of electricity. The higher the number of BTUs per hour per watt of electricity your unit can produce, the less electricity it will consume. I know it sounds a bit confusing, but basically, higher SEER ratings translate into higher savings on your energy bills every month.
My guess is twice the savings on your electric bill might be why some many people are investing in this top of the line Lennox air conditioner. I preformed tune-ups on quite a few of these air conditioners last summer, and to say I was impressed with how well they worked and how quiet they ran would be an understatement. You really need to see one of units in action to appreciate the difference between it and other more standard air conditioners.
A Closer Look at this Air Conditioner
The first thing you will notice is the XC21 is large. A 3 ton XC21 is 47” tall by 35.5” wide and 39.5” deep. That makes it slightly larger than my washing machine, but the design is streamlined and sleek despite its size. The most impressive incentive offered by these systems is their quiet operation. The condenser is virtually silent, and if you have had to deal with a noisy a/c in the past, you will truly appreciate this feature of the XC 21.
Since the XC21 is so energy efficient, it is also a two stage system. This means that the unit will run at varying capacities based upon the weather conditions. This makes it possible for your unit to conserve energy on mild days, but still allows it to be capable of high outputs when the weather demands it.
I’ve worked on thousands of air conditioners over the past 35 years, and this is the one I want for my house. No, I’m not going out and buy one tomorrow. My current air conditioner is still in good shape and it is still more efficient than the average air conditioner on the market. But, when more a/c fails or if electricity prices skyrocket, I will be first in line for a new Lennox XC21!
