Your cooling system relies on refrigerant to remove moisture and heat from the air that passes over the coils. Getting the right levels of Freon in your system takes a firm understanding of how air conditioners work and how to read and interpret pressures within the system. When the charge is not set properly, the air conditioner will have problems that seriously impact the cost of operation and the comfort within the home. At Four Seasons we have seen way too many air conditioners that have improperly charged. Many of the homeowners had no idea there was even a problem, but all the while the air conditioner was suffering the effects of an imbalanced Freon charge. This is just one more reason why having your system assessed annually is so important.
Increasing Energy Costs
The trick to Freon problems is to catch them early on. Whether the system is overcharged or undercharged the same symptoms will be manifested in the home. The first sign that most homeowners will notice is the increase in their energy bills. As the air conditioner begins to work harder it uses more electricity. A slow leak in the system will cause a gradual increase in cost where a large leak or an improper charge will cause a more drastic increase in cost.
Air Conditioner Runs All Day
The next sign you may notice is the length of time that it takes the air conditioner to reach the desired temperature. The air conditioner should cycle on and off regularly throughout the day as the temperature drops to the temperature you have set on the thermostat. Since the system is not charged properly, the Freon cannot remove heat and moisture from the home effectively and the cycles will begin to increase in length. If allowed to continue, the system could run all day long without every cycling off because it cannot meet the set temperature.
No Cold Air
The final sign that indicates a Freon problem is the most obvious: the vents don’t blow cold air. The home becomes incredibly uncomfortable and the customer is on the phone with Four Seasons scheduling an emergency service. If help is called in early on, the system may be saved from high repair costs. We have even seen units that have blown compressors due to an improper Freon charge that was not addressed promptly, so do not wait!
