Hair and grease are your pipes worst enemies! When allowed to travel down your drains they clump together and form nice fat clogs that make getting anything to flow through the drain impossible. Drain cleaner will only get you so far, and at some point you will need a plumber from Four Seasons Home Services to clean out your system. However, what good is it to have your pipes cleaned if you are just going to muck them up again? You need to change your habits and prevent these clogs by taking certain precautions when you flush things down your drains. Keeping these few tips in mind could help you do just that, and prevent future visits from your Four Seasons plumber.
Clog Prevention Tips:
- Grease: Although grease, butter, fat, and oils may turn to liquid when you are using them to cool, it doesn’t mean that they stay that way. When you pour grease down your sink, it hardens rather quickly to the sides of the pipes. The sticky grease will latch onto debris that comes its way and it is not washed away by the water that flows by it. Over time this can cause clogs in your sink and if the problem is bad enough, grease and fat can cause much bigger problems. If you don’t believe us, wait till you are up to your knees in sewage and you may have a change of heart. Pour your grease into a disposable can, wait for it to harden, and then throw it out. It’s that simple.
- Hair: You would be amazed by the amount of hair that we have found clogging drains all across Chicagoland. Like grease, it is very good at making clogs, and should be stopped from going down your drain. Shavings and clipping from haircuts need to go in the garbage. Keep them out of your sink!
- Toilets: Toddlers and toilets don’t mix! Teach your children to keep their toys out of the toilet because we have seen them cause major backups! Another thing to consider would be to place a garbage can next to the toilet. This will encourage your family members and guests to not flush anything down the toilet that shouldn’t be going down it, if you catch our drift.
- Strainers: What about the pieces of hair and other bits of debris that you don’t catch before they go down your sink? Well, purchase thin mesh strainers for your drains and clean them out frequently. They allow water to flow through and can catch particles before they clog up your plumbing.
These simple tips will keep your drains clean and clear. You cannot prevent every plumbing problem though, so Four Seasons Home Services will always be here when your home needs us most.
