Well, I took my own advice and tuned up my air conditioning system. There is bad news and good news. I didn’t have any Freon leaks in my cooling system, so that was good news. However, my air conditioner that I purchased back in 1996 is getting old and the compressor just isn’t pumping the Freon the way it was made to. That was very bad news, but something I could deal with.
Maintaining My Old Air Conditioner
During the air conditioner clean and check I first went through the house and checked all of the registers and floor vents. I made sure they were all open to allow maximum air flow. Then I hooked up my Freon gauges and started up the system to see what the readings were before I cleaned it. I checked inside and outside temperatures plus the temperature of the Freon lines. I wrote all of this information down before I cleaned it. I needed some hard data to make comparisons after the cleaning was done.
To clean the coil I used a commercial grade coil cleaning solvent. This solvent removes everything that’s built up on the coil. The coil looked almost brand new when I was done cleaning it. The second readings of temperature and Freon pressures proved that the cleaning made a positive difference. My unit was running well, but it wasn’t running any were near peak efficiency. My unit is now what I would consider a “money hog.” It is obvious that the unit will have to be replaced, but the only question is when I will actually do it.
Fixing Up the Attic with Four Seasons
I know a guy that knows a guy that works with attic insulation and ventilation. After listening to his spiel about how good he was and how much money I would save, I decided to call Ryan at Four Seasons to do the job. It’s not that the other guy wasn’t a good salesman. He has me half convinced until I realized that I don’t need a salesman, I need a professional that can fix my problem. I learned along time ago deal with people that know how to do the job right, not someone that only knows how to sell the job. I trust Ryan, and I’ve seen his work. His crew came out and installed a power attic vent and cleaned out all of my static vents in one day. They also installed these foam baffles to keep the air path open from the soffit vent into the attic space. Then they blew in eight inches of insulation. My attic ventilation and insulation problems were solved in one day.
Duct Cleaning and Deciding the Future
Next was the duct cleaning day. This was a compromise made between my wife and me. She wanted the ducts cleaned and I wanted to sleep at night. If you’re married you know what I mean. The duct guys were in and out in about four and a half hours, and I must admit they did a good job. They didn’t even leave mess for me to clean up!
Everything I talked about in parts one and two of this blog are now complete. My air conditioner is doing better, but I can tell I’m going to have to replace it. Being the chicken that I am, I’m going to leave my wife to decide when we’re going to get it done. You see, I pay the mortgage and she pays the utility bills, so I have a feeling she’s going to have it done really soon.
