Using a Programmable Thermostat

What is one of the easiest ways that you can save energy, money and help fight global warming?  By properly using one of many programmable thermostats currently on the market.  A programmable thermostat can make it easy for you to save by having four settings to regulate the temperature in your home both summer and winter, whether you are home, asleep, or away.  The settings that are offered on a programmable thermostat give you savings without compromising your comfort level, and you can adjust them to whatever is best for your family’s needs.  The idea is to establish the program to automatically reduce the heat and air in your home when you don’t need it as much.

Keep the temperature set at the best energy savings point for the longest periods of time.  This would be during the day when nobody is home, and overnight while you are sleeping.  If you constantly use “hold” or override the preprogrammed settings, your furnace or air conditioner will run longer, you will use more energy and in turn pay higher energy bills.  Remember that moving the thermostat way up to 85 degrees  or way down to 45 degrees does not heat or cool your home any faster!  When a thermostat is programmed to reach a temperature at a set time the furnace or air conditioner is timed to “kick on” with plenty of time to accommodate the next temperature setting.  And don’t forget that if your thermostat runs on batteries they should be changed every six months, or when the thermostat indicates that they may be running low. Your home heating & cooling system will operate at it’s optimum level and you should see the benefits to your energy bill in no time. Don’t forget to change the filter to your furnace and central air conditioning system regularly too!
