Mulch and air conditioners don’t mix. During the past two weeks, I have seen six air conditioners that had so much mulch packed around them that it caused problems with the operation of the units. Two of the six were shot because of leaking and corroded condenser coils. The mulch and dirt packed around these units must have been there for years, and their coils sprung a leak from all of the corrosion caused by the excessive amounts of mulch and lack of regular maintenance. The other four were just dirty and neglected. Raising and leveling the air conditioner’s pad and then cleaning the dirt out from around the coils and compressor helped increase the function and efficiency of these units, and luckily they were able to be salvaged for the homeowners.
The Root of the Problem
The point is all six of these customers wasted money on utility bills and preventable repairs. Two of these homeowners had to shovel out the cost of replacing the air conditioner because they didn’t catch their problem in time to make the system worth saving! Most air conditioners are placed or should I say hidden from view to make the back yard more attractive. The problem is that many people don’t think about their air conditioners unless they act up or breakdown.
Hug Your Air Conditioner!
Instead of watching hundreds of homeowner face this same predicament, I am proposing that we start a “Have You Hugged Your Air Conditioner?” campaign. We need to get the word out about air conditioner neglect, and about how a good hug, or maintenance cleaning, could get their system back on the right track. I know the idea sounds stupid at first but so does spending thousands of dollars replacing neglected air conditioners!
Learn from Their Mistakes!
This campaign will probably never really happen, but the take away message from this article is that your air conditioner needs attention every summer! If it needs cleaning, clean it. If it needs leveling, have it leveled! Don’t wait for a breakdown to take action, and if your call Four Seasons, we can help you give your air conditioner a big hug this summer season with one of out expert tune-ups!
