Summer heat waves are beginning to subside and thoughts of the upcoming winter are starting to creep in. Now is the time to set up an appointment to have your furnace tuned-up and inspected. I like to think of the last weeks of summer as the two minute warning before winter. It’s true you probably won’t turn your furnace on for another month or so, but it’s also true if you have an older furnace this might be a good time to find out if it will last you the entire fall and winter seasons .
Proactive Furnace Inspections
A thorough inspection from your HVAC technician can find many underlying problems that could show up in the near future. Finding and fixing minor problems before the cold weather strikes just makes sense. Finding and dealing with major issues will put you in control of the situation. Let’s face the facts. If your furnace is on its last leg, having a month or two to decide if you want to have a major repair done or if you are going to replace your furnace puts you in the driver’s seat. Many furnace sales are going on when it’s warm outside, but when its 10 below zero, you need to make a decision quickly before you, your family, and your pipes freeze.
I have always been proactive in caring for the maintenance needs of my home, and yes, I did have to replace my furnace once. However, I got lucky and discovered it needed replacing during warm weather because I had the system checked early. This gave me a chance to get the best deal on a new furnace. In the off season, I was able to get a 98% efficient furnace for not much more than a 90% unit. For a few bucks more I saved 8% on my AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating. This will translate into hundreds of dollars in gas bill savings over the life of the furnace. The difference in price between the two furnaces will be paid off in two or three years, and the next twenty years will be pure profit.
Give some serious thought to having your yearly maintenance done on your furnace before the heating season begins, it could save you hundreds of dollars and give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing you will have a problem free winter!
