Dogs may be man’s best friend but they are also your air conditioner’s worst enemy! Those of us that have made these adorable creatures a part of our families need to ask ourselves a very important question, “Where does my dog mark his territory in my backyard?” We let our pooches outdoors to do their business, but have they developed a habit that could be detrimental to home comfort? Every summer Four Seasons encounters countless a/c’s that have been destroyed because they were used as a bathroom for your pooch.
Dog Urine Eating Away At Your A/C
Dog urine contains chemicals that through repeated exposure can cut through the metal on your air conditioner. First the outer casing is eaten through, and then the coils are exposed to the toxic urine. The coils are the part of the a/c that house the refrigerant used to cool the air in the home. When these are eaten through by chemicals, the refrigerant escapes. At this point, you have little choice but to replace the system. The coils are damaged beyond repair and the breakdown of the other components makes repairing the system implausible.
Protecting Your Air Conditioner in the Future
Installing a new air conditioner is only the first step to eliminating this problem in your home. You need to prevent your pup from destroying the new air conditioner with his old habits. Dogs are creatures of habit and once they get into this habit, breaking it will be near impossible. Your only option is to keep the dog away. A small fence installed 18” to 2’ away from the air conditioner will keep your dog at bay while allowing the air conditioner adequate air flow. Protect your investment and prevent this unfortunate habit from costing you your home comfort once again.
