According to the weatherman, it’s going to be hot and muggy for the next week! What do you think you should do? The first thing that comes to my mind is the air conditioner and keeping my house cool! If you worry about the comfort in your home, take these tips and put them into action. Preparations now will pay off in comfort when the heat wave hits!
Three Steps to Comfort:
- Set the Temperature: The first thing I would do is get the house to my favorite temperature. Some people like 70 degrees some like it even cooler. At my house we decided 75 was the perfect temperature. Why would we get the house cool before the heat wave hits? It’s simple! It costs less to maintain your comfort level than to fight Mother Nature after the heat wave hits.
- Check the A/C: My second preparation would be to double check my cooling system. Do I have a clean filter in my furnace? Is the condenser unit in the back yard reasonably clean? A clean air conditioner will be able to keep up with the extreme heat. Filters are cheap. I always have a few extra sitting next to the furnace just in case the weather is going to be particularly bad. The outside unit is another story, one day it is clean the next it has enough cottonwood fuzzies blocking the air flow through the coil that you could probably knit a sweater out of them. It only takes five minutes and a garden hose to rinse them off. Some people think I’m nuts for harping on about cleaning off the coil, but I’ve seen the damage a dirty coil can do during an extended heat wave.
- Keep the Windows Closed: The final preparation for an extended heat wave I leave for my wife to handle. She always makes sure that all of the windows in the home remain closed. Then she warns the children what will happen to them if they let the cool air out and the warm into the house. It really works great. She’s great at threats. The fact is, if you allow all of the humid air into your house at night, the air conditioner has to work harder to remove the excess moisture the next day. This is a trap a lot of people fall into. It seems nice and cool at night, but the humidity in that cool air becomes a problem during the heat of the day.
We prepare for any extremes in weather be it bitter cold in the winter or sweltering heat in the summer. I can’t prove it saves us money on our utility bills, but I can say with out a doubt we are always comfortable at my house.
