Small heating units like electric heaters and Gas space heaters are a great convenience and a cheap work around in your home. That being said, there are several safety issues you should take into account when considering them.
- Never place a gas or electric space heater near any material that can burn, such as, furniture, draperies, paper, plastic, wood, etc.
- You should never leave a space heater on and unattended as it can be a fire hazard.
- Be sure to keep children away from them and be sure they understand that they are hot and that they will get burned if they touch them.
Space heaters are safe and effective when used properly under adult supervision and in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. As with any tool or appliance, when used correctly they are a safe and effective means of heating a small space temporarily or when needed only seldom.
However, if your house is experiencing cold spots in multiple locations or you need a trouble area covered more regularly it should be pointed out that small space heaters are often more expensive to maintain. In these cases you may want to look into a new furnace and/or a whole house zone system. See our company posts on zone systems for more info.
