A recent case involving a nationally recognized plumbing contractor is a sobering reminder to homeowners everywhere to be careful who they trust with their home repairs. Several homeowners handed over thousands of dollars and saw their lawns torn up to perform repairs that were never really needed. Here at Four Seasons, we are tired of hearing about these types of scams and we want to protect the good people of Chicago and their homes. From this case there are three rules that can be learned by every homeowner for any type of home repair service.
Three Rules for Hiring a Contractor:
1. Don’t Get Scared, Get a Second Opinion: In the case of this plumbing repair contractor, all of the complaints involved the use of scare tactics to sell an expensive repair. The homeowner called the contractor thinking they only needed minor work done, and after the repairman painted a frightening picture of a home disaster, the customer agreed to pay thousands to have their yards excavated and their plumbing “repaired.”Get a second opinion and confirm your fears before paying out to any contractor.
2. Be Careful When Hiring Subcontractors: Once the authorities began to investigate, the company was very cooperative in resolving the complaints filed by the customers. They found that many of the complaints were caused by the same subcontractor that the company used to perform their repairs. The subcontractor wasn’t following the same code of ethics that the company stood for, and was scamming their customers instead. As the homeowner, be sure to check if your contractor is going to use subcontractors to complete their work. If they are, you should be careful to proceed because that person may not be as trustworthy as the company you thought you hired.
3. Trust Four Seasons Instead: Four Seasons Home Services doesn’t use scare tactics or subcontractors to complete the jobs that our customers need. We believe that honesty and integrity are more important than making a quick buck, and we promise to deliver services that exceed our customers’ expectations of what a home repair company should be.
