I checked all of the things I mentioned in part1 of this post, and I figured out why my air-conditioner wasn’t keeping up in this hot weather. I was surprised what I found when I went through the cooling system step by step, and I bet that if you performed these same checks in your home, you would be surprised too!
The Filter Check
The first component I checked was my furnace filter and cold air-drop on the furnace. I wasn’t surprised that the 6 month filter was still in excellent shape because it was only a month old. However, the amount of dust and dirt in my cold air return got me thinking about duct cleaning services. This was probably not what is causing my cooling problems, but it was something I wanted to keep in the back of my mind during this whole process.
The Condenser Check
The outside check of the condenser went smoothly. My condenser coil wasn’t that dirty, but I knew it needed to be sprayed down with a good coil cleaner to bring it back to its highest efficiency level possible. The plants growing around my air-conditioner were far enough away, so I ruled them out as a possible cause of my air conditioner issue. So at this point, two out of three preliminary checks were done and still I didn’t find any major problems.
The Problematic Attic
The next step was the attic. Out came the ladder and up into the attic I went on a 90+ degree day. This is the last check I’ve got to do before deciding a course of action to repair my problem. You can’t believe how hot it was in my attic. I would have lost two dress sizes if I were a woman, just from sweating! All the sweating was worth it though because I think I found the reason why my air conditioner wasn’t keeping up! My attic wasn’t venting the way that it should. I also noticed that in some areas the insulation seemed to have settled a bit over time. This is defiantly not good for my comfort, my air conditioner, or my monthly energy bills.
Discussing Our Options
I spent a few hours talking to the wife about our options to correct the situation we found ourselves in, and our conclusion was that we needed to get an insulation and ventilation company out to quote repairing our attic ventilation problem. I also needed to clean and check my air-conditioner (I’m in the business I should have been doing it every year anyways). Finally, for peace of mind and to get my wife off my back, we are going to get our ducts cleaned.
By the end of next week I should have had everything done that I’ve talked about. I’m hoping for some hot weather afterwards so I can let you know if it resolved the problem with the air conditioner not being able to keep up on hot days.
